So Arizona has passed some laws recently and I just wanted to take a moment to comment on some of them. However I do feel the need to pre-face this with some other information.
I am a registered democrat. I am not of the love everyone, give out free things and let everyone do what they want breed of democrat though. I have some very republican based ideals and then I have some very liberal based ideals. I like to think that I am a good balance between both.
First law up for discussion: Arizona Concealed Weapons Bill: Permit No Longer Required
Arizona has decided that if you are 21 and a law abiding citizen, you no longer need to go through a class and register for a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The opposition to this says that it will now allow waves of people who are unfamiliar with guns to now carry a conceal weapon potentially leading to situations where someone is either going to get hurt or die.
Let me call bullshit on this one. The honest fact of the matter is that regardless of permit or not, if you are unfamiliar with the proper handling of a gun all a 8 hour class is going to do for you is teach you the laws regarding carrying said weapon and what constitutes lawful use of the weapon. Those laws still are in effect. You had to show you are proficient in use of the weapon in order to pass a class so the people who are weapons challenged usually either wash out when it comes to this part of the class or the instructor fudges the paperwork. Bottom line is that even with the permit requirements we still had tons of people running around that had no right to be carrying a loaded concealed weapon.
You just can’t educate an idiot into not being an idiot.
What the new law will do is allow people like me, and believe me our government spent a lot of money to ensure I was very proficient in weapons, who are either to damn busy to schedule a class three months out or too poor to afford the obnoxious price of those classes to carry a conceal weapon when we deem it a needed precaution. This does not mean that every time I walk out of the house after the law takes effect I am going to be strapped. It just means that when I go places where I feel the need to have the added protection of a weapon I can do so without advertising the fact I am armed.
Remember: Criminals will do what they want no matter what the law is, so at least now the playing field has been leveled and law abiding citizens do not have to come empty handed to situations where the criminal has come armed.
Birther Law
This one is stupid as sin! While I agree that our presidential candidates should be following the constitutional laws governing this country do we really need laws at a state level re-enforcing the law? This is a very good example of conspiracy nuts winning. I am not even going to waste that much time on this one.
Bill SB1070: Arizona Immigration Law
Now this one is hot. Was just signed yesterday (4/23/10) into law and people are all twisted out of sorts on it.
I support it.
Do I think that there will be situations of abuse? Yup, just like there is abuse of every other law there is. Do I think that some poor Mexican is going to get harassed illegally because of this? Yup, just like other minorities have been illegally harassed because of their skin/nationality/sexuality/political views.
Abuse happens. Work on fixing it at all levels and deal with it. This law is a measure at a state level to address an out of control situation our federal government keeps turning a blind eye to. Arizona is one of the key states that deals will the bulk of illegal traffic moving through it and as such we see a large amount of crime come from it, we have public and private property that is destroyed because of it and we have a large drain on our resources because of it.
And it is not just Mexican nationals, so quit looking at this post like I have something to grind against the Hispanic community. Unfortunately Mexico is a gateway destination for any and all illegal entries regardless of what part of the world they come from and they are going to funnel up through the border states because of it. This is just a fact of the world.
What I would love to see is our law enforcement properly trained and the tide of illegal aliens that are moving through or residing in Arizona cut down on or removed. Employers that are using illegal immigrants for cheap labor fined or shut down. Human traffickers prosecuted imprisoned and put out of business.
I am a US citizen by birth. I grew up speaking the common language of our nation and I have not only followed but served my country defending the laws of our nation. In certain parts of our nation even though this is my country of origin I am treated as a second class citizen. A lot of public services within Arizona are either designed to assist illegal immigrants or are running out of money because they are supporting illegal immigrants. The schools spend more money on “culture integration” classes than they do on the entire student body then turn around screaming poor because they are running out of money while teaching the kids English and about their country of origins cultural behavior.
Very big thing here in Southern Arizona? La Raza. This group original founded to assist with the rights of the Hispanic community in the face of discrimination and adversity. Noble beliefs that have been perverted to a new view that is now being marched out and abused/misused by a generation that has no understanding (nor do they want it) of what it was originally founded for.
I have tiptoed around it during this section of the post but let me come right out and say that the bulk of those who this law are going to affect are part of the Hispanic community. Sad state of affairs but when the bulk of illegal immigrants are Mexican nationals, it is going to happen.
If you are legally in this country then quit yer bitching and live your life. If your Nana or Tio are here illegally then they had a good run, it is time to return to the motherland until they get the proper paperwork to come back legally. Unfortunately since they broke the law in the first place they are going to have to wait several years before they can get approval. Same goes for any other members of your family. Yeah it is going to suck ass that families are going to be broken up but if things had been done legally the first time none of this mess would exist. Just because a woman crossed an invisible line and gave birth to a child should not grant that mother or child the right to become a drain on resources set up for our own citizens or those who have entered this country legally.
Illegal immigrants are here illegally. Illegal – to break the law – to be a criminal – to engage in behavior that goes against the laws of the city/state/country. What part of that is so hard to understand? The idea that we should simply say “Oh you are an illegal immigrant? Here, lets fill out this paperwork and make you legal! We will go ahead and overlook the fact you broke our laws and give you a free pass” is asinine. If you break the law you should pay for it. We do not raise our children to believe that they can act in a negative fashion without repercussions and it is time we start re-enforcing that at a national level. Break the law and get punished.
I am a US Citizen. I was born here. I have lived here all my life. I have paid for this country. I have served this country. I have cried sweated and bled for this country.
And all the assholes who want to cheapen that by giving away the country for free to a bunch of criminals need to be jack slapped for being idiots. How about you get your head out of your asses and look around. While you are so busy worrying about people from other countries you have people from and in your own country that are in need of assistance. Take care of business at home first before worrying about your neighbors.
